When it is your first time learning to surf the amazing waves of the sea, then you need to check out some of the basic guides for amateur surfers. You have to value them, and you might as well consider them to be a survival guide.
Yes, surfing is an amazing and incredible sport, but it can be fatal. There have been many surfers over the years that attained some serious injury. It is not a joke to ride huge and powerful waves. It is cool, but it takes a lot of skill and practice to get it right. You also need to respect that it is a sport combined with the strength of nature.
The first and most important thing to consider when you want to become a surfer is you have to be a good swimmer, not just a good swimmer, but a strong swimmer. It would be such a joke and needless to say critical if you did not know how to swim properly. You are dealing with big waves that can possibly crush you. You also need to know how far you can swim. Do not ever paddle out into the sea with your board to a distance that you cannot swim back from. The rope attached to your board might break and so you would have to swim all the way back. The sea just like other any gift of nature is unpredictable. You are much at risk compared to playing basketball in a court.
With that said, it is necessary that if you are learning to surf, you have to be in good shape. You need to be physically fit. This sport demands the right physique. To master every skill needed, you will need to practice for hours in a day. Needless to say you need strength and stamina. You are going to paddle, swim, stand while wave riding. All of the physical things you need to do require energy. Be sure you got what it takes. You also need to stay calm and focused. Your mind gives a whole contribution too. When you come across a wave that you might not be ready for, you should not panic or lose control. Being in control of yourself as well as the board is necessary.
And lastly, when you are out learning to surf, observe all safety precautions. First of all, do not go surfing alone. Bring a fellow surfer along or at least somebody who is also a good swimmer. And also, do not go surfing after a heavy meal. That is just asking for a nasty stomach ache. Wait for at least an hour before heading out to the beach.
Another important thing you should consider is if you’re still learning the basics, try practicing in a less crowded area. Having many surfers in the same beach might just end you up in a collision. If ever there are other surfers, keep your distance. You have to think about how long your board is too.
